Asthma 101

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that inflames and narrows the airways. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing. Asthma can be triggered by exercise, allergens, cold air, smoke, or other irritants. People with asthma often have sensitivities to one or more triggers. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be managed with medication and avoiding triggers. With proper treatment, most people with asthma can live normal, active lives. At Allergies.org, our goal is to provide information and resources that will help people with asthma to manage their condition and live healthier lives.

Asthma Treatement

There are many different types of asthma treatments available today. Some people with asthma may only need a rescue inhaler for occasional symptom relief, while others may require daily medication and regular monitoring by a doctor. The goal of asthma treatment is to control the symptoms and prevent asthma attacks. There are two main types of asthma medications: long-term control medications and quick-relief (rescue) inhalers. Long-term control medications are taken daily to prevent symptoms and reduce inflammation in the airways. Quick-relief inhalers provide fast relief from bronchoconstriction during an asthma attack. In some cases, other treatments such as allergy shots or surgery may be recommended. Talk to your doctor about what type of asthma treatment is right for you.
