University of Oklahoma Health officials calling it one of the worst allergy seasons yet.

“It seems like almost every year, though, things get worse and worse in Oklahoma. It’s definitely an issue and something that we’re seeing a lot of,” said Dr. Edward El Rassi, assistance professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at OU Health.

Allergies are the sixth-leading cause of chronic illness, and more than 50 million Americans, including children and adults, suffer from allergies each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Allergy shots are the closest thing to a cure we can offer our patients,” Marcotte explains. “People typically receive allergy shots for three to five years to essentially ‘turn off’ their allergies. The shots are not medication, so they’re more holistic, and they help people build up a tolerance to their allergens.”

Nasal Spray for Allergies Now Available Without a Prescription.

A little over a year after its FDA approval, Bayer has announced that its prescription-strength nasal spray for indoor and outdoor allergies (brand name Astepro) is now available over the counter nationwide.

Astepro, which is made up of 0.15% strength of the antihistamine azelastine and can take just 30 minutes to kick in, is the first and only steroid-free antihistamine nasal spray for allergies that can be purchased without a prescription.
